Vitamin A is an essential, fat-soluble nutrient required for vision, growth, reproduction, cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and the integrity of the immune system. Vitamin A is derived from both preformed retinoids and provitamin carotenoids. Preformed retinoids, such as retinol and retinoic acid, are found in animal sources such as liver, kidney, eggs, and dairy products. Carotenoids such as beta-carotene (which has the highest vitamin A activity) are found in plants such as dark or yellow vegetables and carrots. The most potent form of vitamin A, all-trans retinol, is the form of retinol contained in the diet. Preformed vitamin A is efficiently absorbed from the small intestine at an absorption range from 60%-90%. The absorption of vitamin A requires bile salts, pancreatic enzymes and dietary fat. Preformed vitamin A reverses signs and symptoms of vitamin A deficiency and is the standard for vitamin A activity One mcg of dietary or supplemental vitamin A is equal to one mcg of retinol (1 IU is equivalent to 0.3 mcg of retinol, and 1 mcg of retinol is equivalent to 3.33 IU of retinol).
