Suggested Use

Cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) is a bark that is rich in hormone-like oils that promote peristaltic action in the colon. It is one of the best herbs to use for chronic constipation and (some herbalists say that it is not habit-forming) its effects can be felt within 6 to 8 hours, producing soft stools with little discomfort. It increases the secretions of the stomach, liver and pancreas and exerts a remarkable action in torpor of the colon in constipation.

Cascara is very valuable for hemorrhoids due to poor bowel function. It helps to promote painless evacuations and, after extended usage, the bowels will function naturally and regularly from its tonic effects. It is cleansing to the colon and helps rebuild its functions. Cascara has often been recommended as part of cleansing and detoxifying programs and in small doses it may be an effective liver tonic.

Cautions

Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have a kidney disorder or are taking cardiac medications such as cardiac glycosides or antiarrhythmic medications, or if you have faecal impaction or symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or fever. Reduce dose or discontinue use if abdominal cramps, spasms, pain and/or diarrhoea occur. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root or other drugs may aggravate electrolyte imbalance. Do not use if you have abnormal constrictions of the gastrointestinal tract, potential or existing intestinal blockage, atonic bowel, appendicitis, inflammatory colon disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin, undiagnosed rectal bleeding, severe dehydration with depleted water or electrolytes or diarrhoea. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Hypersensitivity is known to occur, in which case, discontinue use.
