Bone, a constantly changing tissue

Bone is continually subjected to a process of renewal and repair: our bone capital thus adapts to the biomechanical stresses of our existence, replacing old tissue with new tissue. Bone has amazing self-healing properties, making it able to regenerate itself when damaged. Thus, after a fracture, realignment and retention of the limb is generally sufficient for healing: by generating new tissue, the process of osteogenesis fills the deficit due to the fracture, restoring the functional efficiency of the bone.

The decrease in bone density accelerates after menopause, which usually occurs around age 51. In young adults, the amount of newly formed bone is greater than that of destroyed bone, resulting in a gradual increase in bone density until around the age of 30, when it is at its maximum.

Osteoporosis is a progressive metabolic bone disease, which decreases bone density (bone mass per unit volume), with deterioration of bone architecture. Brittle bones cause fractures that are caused by minor trauma or that may have gone unnoticed, especially in the lumbar spine, wrist and hip (called fragility fractures). Prevention and treatment are based on modifying risk factors, with healthy lifestyle habits, high calcium intake (1200 mg per day), vitamin D (800-1000 IU per day), protein (1g / kg weight), lots of fruits and vegetables, little alcohol and salt you can help slow bone loss, exercise to strengthen bones and muscles, improve balance and minimize the risk of falls,
