Vitamin D3 is well known for its benefits on bone density and calcium metabolism in general, but its roles in the body are much more numerous. It plays a crucial role in the functioning of the immune system, but also important functions for muscle cells, brain function and cell differentiation (Afshan et al., 2021).

In recent decades, several studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for various diseases, including osteoporosis and seasonal depression. Since then, epidemiological studies have demonstrated strong associations between seasonal variations in vitamin D levels and the incidence of various infectious diseases, including respiratory infections and influenza. Indeed, in people with a documented vitamin D deficiency, the immune response would be weakened or abnormal, making them automatically more likely to fall victim to seasonal epidemic outbreaks and to develop an increased degree of serious respiratory symptoms.
