Product Details

Vitamin A is essential for the proper functioning of a large number of biological processes, including eyesight, the integrity of mucous membranes and epithelial surfaces, and the body's immune defense system. Although many people are able to convert provitamin A carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, into vitamin A, recent research has revealed that genetic variations may limit this conversion in some people. Genetic variations in the enzyme BCMO1 (beta-carotene 15,15'-monooxygenase 1) can reduce the efficiency of converting carotenoids to retinal by 69%. Called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), these common variations can be countered with retinol (vitamin A) supplementation. As variations in the BCMO1 gene have also been linked to macular pigment density, this formula includes a blend of lutein, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin, the two carotenoids found in macular pigment, are antioxidants that help maintain good eye health. Astaxanthin provides additional support for antioxidant defenses by protecting the phospholipid membranes of cells from oxidative stress.
