Periwinkle is a forgotten medicinal plant, its Latin name Vinca gives us precious indications about its therapeutic power. In fact, Vinca comes from the Latin verb vincare which means conquer, meaning that this plant, always green and sign of great vitality, wins over a disease but also winter and the cold season.

Its properties are explained in part by the presence of vincamine (non toxic indolic alkaloid), which improves cerebral oxygenation, lowers diastolic arterial pressure with a rapid drop of the noradrenalin cerebral level. The pressure drop (similar to the one caused by reserpin) comes from the decrease in the peripheral vascular resistance (peripheral vasodilator), this leads to a better cerebral irrigation. As opposed to most of the other hypotensive, vincamine does not lower the cardiac frequency nor the blood flow.

Recent research shows that Periwinkle acts effectively on the cerebral circulation and stimulates the electrical activity of the brain. It is indicated in numerous cerebrovascular problems directly or indirectly linked to the brain, notably vertigo (Ménière`s disease), behavioural emotional problems (irritability, anguish, uncertainty), disorderly diction, trembling.

Periwinkle is therefore useful for the after effects of thrombosis as well as cerebral trauma (CVA).

The regular intake of the Periwinkle glycerin macerate revitalizes the whole cerebral metabolism and is useful for prevention. It is a remedy for faulty memory, loss of attention and cerebral arteriosclerosis.

Periwinkle is efficient for certain circulatory origin problems (premature and sudden deafness, certain tinnitus). Improves the blood micro-capillary of the eyes (spastic retinopathy).

As an antispasmodic (and circulatory) Periwinkle is indicated in migraines and in particular in coronary spasms (these can bring behavioral emotional problems as described above).
