Product Details
About 1.4 million adult Canadians have been diagnosed with Lactose Intolerance (LI), and estimates of the total LI population in Canada are as high as 25% or 8.5 million. Most treatment approaches involve the use of lactase-based digestive enzymes, consumption of dairy products with lactose removed, or complete avoidance of dairy products altogether. NOW® Sulmedol® can restore and maintain lactose tolerance, providing real freedom from lactose intolerance.
Some people lack the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest lactose, or milk sugar. Symptoms of lactose intolerance can include gas, bloating, flatulence, stomach rumbling, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and even vomiting after the consumption of dairy products. Usually LI affects individuals in their teen years and increases in severity with age. The condition can also run in families. It occurs more often in Native Americans and people of Asian, African, and South American descent than among people of European descent. Sulmedol® is patented and NPN approved in Canada for restoring lactose tolerance based on the research by Dr. Airudin Khan M.D. of London, Ontario. In Dr. Khan’s clinical study, a total of 80% of patients remained lactose tolerant after a 12 week treatment period with Sulmedol® . By turning on the genes to reactivate lactase production, and providing the building blocks to make the protein involved in making the lactase enzyme, Sulmedol® can help restore and maintain lactose tolerance. Sulmedol® is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Directions
Adults and Adolescents 11 and over: Take 1 capsule, twice daily immediately after meals until symptoms of lactose intolerance disappear (generally from 2 to 12 weeks), then continue taking for an additional 4 weeks after symptoms have disappeared. For best results, cease consumption of all foods containing dairy (except when testing for symptoms), including lactose-free dairy products as well as lactase enzymes, and ensure proper hydration and adequate B-12 intake while taking SULMEDOL®. Relapse may eventually occur; in which case, resume treatment as directed.

Cautions
Sulmedol capsules must be taken according to directions. Exceeding the recommended dose may cause diarrhea. It is essential to maintain adequate hydration. Daily intake of 8 glasses of water is advisable as metabolites of Sulmedol are excreted through the kidneys. Avoid soya milk as it causes increased flatulence. Do not use if you have kidney failure or liver failure, if you are constipated, or have diarrhea that is not due to milk and dairy products. Do not use when you have a peptic ulcer. Sulmedol may be used after the peptic ulcer has healed. Do not use if you have severe anemia. Sulmedol may be taken after the anemia has been corrected. Do not use together with phenacetin, acetanilid and Bromoseltzer. Sulmedol is not indicated for galactosemia. There are no known allergies to Sulmedol. Consult your doctor before taking Sulmedol if you are allergic to sulfites or sulphur-containing drugs. There were no teratogenic effects to Sulmedol in animal studies. However, Sulmedol is not recommended for use during pregnancy. If you have diabetes, consult your doctor as your blood sugar may change while your lactose tolerance is being restored by Sulmedol. Do not take supplemental lactase enzyme tablets, lactase caplets or drops, or use lactose free milk during treatment with Sulmedol or after your lactose tolerance has been restored by Sulmedol. Consult your doctor if you continue to have gas, bloating or diarrhea after four (4) to six (6) weeks of treatment with Sulmedol as you may be vitamin B12 deficient or have additional medical problems. Vitamin B12 deficiency must be corrected as a normal serum vitamin B12 level is necessary for Sulmedol to be effective. Consult your doctor if you have additional questions about Sulmedol. No known allergies but should be used with caution if allergic to sulfites or sulfur-containing drugs. In clinical study, transient bloating (2.6%) and flatulence (4.8%) occurred during the first few days of treatment with Sulmedol.
