Omega-3s are essential for good health. They are part of the cell membranes of each of our cells and serve as the basic material for the production of anti-inflammatory molecules within the human body. The North American diet does not provide enough omega-3s to help maintain beneficial levels. It would be necessary to eat 3 to 4 servings of oily fish per week in order to sustain such levels.

The omega-6/omega-3 balance in the North American diet is 20:1 to 50:1 (Mariamenatu and Abdu, 2021). However, it should be 4:1 (omega-6 is in excess by 5 times when compared to omega-3). Omega-6s, which we consume in excess, compared to omega-3s, come from meat or vegetable oils and are used to produce inflammatory molecules.
