Astaxanthin is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, known as the “king of carotenoids”. It is significantly more potent, in terms of quenching free radicals, than other members of the carotenoid family. Astaxanthin Plus by Natural Factors combines astaxanthin with lutein and zeaxanthin to protect against oxidative damage, providing cardiovascular and immune system support and protecting the skin from premature aging and other health risks associated with UV exposure. Astaxanthin also has gastro-protective effects and helps support eye health.
Astaxanthin Plus contains non-GMO ingredients, including AstaREAL® natural astaxanthin made from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. AstaREAL is produced by fermentation and is significantly more effective at scavenging free radicals than the synthetic form, which is made with petrochemicals. Although the body is equipped with its own natural antioxidant defences, they can become overwhelmed by overexposure to everyday environmental factors such as pollution and stress, as well as by the production of reactive oxygen species that are a result of normal metabolic processes. How it works
Oxidative damage can be seen as a form of “biological rust” that impairs the function of our cells and tissues, just as rust weakens a bridge or impairs an engine. Over time, oxidative damage can contribute to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, age-related macular degeneration, insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's, as well as skin diseases and other visible signs of aging. Most antioxidants are either hydrophilic (water soluble) or lipophilic (lipid soluble), meaning that their activity is limited to protection of the lipid (fat) component of cells, or to the aqueous (water) part of cells. Water-soluble antioxidants such as vitamin C offer protection to the blood and the fluids within and around cells. Lipid-soluble antioxidants such as vitamin E are located in cell membranes, protecting the exterior of the cells from oxidation. Both types of antioxidants are required for complete cellular protection. Astaxanthin is unique in that it is both water- and lipid-soluble. Its chemical structure allows it to be present both inside and outside the cells, offering better overall protection against oxidative damage.
